Take a Break With Excel Games

Excel Blackjack

It’s the middle of the week, and you’re buried under a pile of Excel workbooks. The weekend seems to be miles away.

To get you over the midweek hump, here are three examples of spreadsheet fun and games.

Take a Gamble

Apparently he doesn’t like kids’ board games like Candyland or Trouble, so Ken Puls created a Blackjack game in Excel, for his daughter.

Well, maybe it’s not actually for the kids, but it could be fun to gamble with your boss during the lunch hour. Who’ll go home with a pay cheque this week?

Full Body Spreadsheeting

Yesterday I read an article that said spreadsheets might be more fun if they had motion operators, like Wii or Kinect.

That sounded like a great idea to me, so I wrote about it on the Spreadsheet Day blog: Would Wii Kinect With Spreadsheets That Move?

Would you have more fun at the office if you controlled Excel by swinging your arms, or by wobbling on a balance board?

We might be in better shape, if nothing else!

Space Invaders for Excel

An impressive video, Spreadsheet Invasion, was created by Amy Thornley, frame by frame in Excel, for an online contest, Smile For London.

If you’re old enough to remember Space Invaders, this might make you smile.

You can see the video at this link on the Vimeo site.

  1. I played Candyland once, for about 5 minutes, and then the 3-year-old got bored and wandered off. Thank goodness!

It’s like Snakes and Ladders, but with pictures of candy, and a higher price tag. I’m sure there are better games for you to Excel-ize.

  2. Oh gad! If I never see another instance of snakes and ladders it’ll be too soon. My little one loved(loves?) that game… I’m halfway convinced it’s so attractive to her because Daddy doesn’t… 🙂
