Turn Off Grey Watermark Page 1 on Excel Worksheet

Since the beginning of (Excel) time, people have asked questions about the big grey “Page 1” that sometimes appears on a worksheet. How did it get there? Is it a watermark? How do I get rid of it? Will it show up on printed copies? My short video, below,  answers those questions for you!

The screen shot below shows an example of the “Page 1” text, in the middle of an Excel sheet with an order data entry table.

Watch this short video to see what that mysterious big grey “Page 1” watermark is, and how you can turn it off and on.

Bonus: In the video, I also share a few tips on using Excel’s Page Break Preview feature, if you plan to print your worksheet.

Turn Off Page 1 Watermark

If you’ve watched the video, you know that “Page 1” text is not really watermark. It’s a sign that you’re using Page Break Preview setting to view your worksheet.

Here are the steps to change that setting:

  • On the Excel Ribbon, go to the View tab
  • In the Workbook Views group, click on Normal

The “Page 1” will disappear from the worksheet view.

Icons in Excel Status Bar

Another way to switch between workbook views is to use the icons on the Excel Status Bar, at the bottom right of the Excel window.

If you don’t see the icons there, right-click on the Status Bar, and then click View Shortcuts, to add a check mark

When those icons have a check mark, they should be visible in the Excel Status Bar.
