Add Filter Commands at Top of Right-Click Menus

Add Filter Commands at Top of Right-Click Menus

Do you spend lots of time in Excel tables, filtering the data, then clearing those filters later? If so, this free add-in from AlexJ will help you save time. The add-in will add filter commands at the top of right-click menus, where they’re easy to use.

Filter Commands on Right-Click Menus

If you use a right-click to filter a named Excel table, or a pivot table, it takes a couple of clicks, and a bit of mouse travelling.

Here’s a screen shot of the right-click menu, when a pivot table row label is the active cell. Filter is the 5th item listed, and you need to click there, to get to the Filter commands.

Use the Right-Click Filter Add-in

Here’s a screen shot of the same right-click menu, after installing the Right-Click Filter add-in.. There are 2 popular Filter commands at the top of the menu, and you can use them with one click.

Different Filter Commands

The filter commands at the top of the right-click menu will change slightly, based on which type of cell you right-click.

In the animated screen shot below, the first right-click is on a named Excel table cell, and the second right-click is on a pivot table row label cell.

Install the Filter Add-in

The Filter Add-in is in xlam format, so it’s easy to install. Just store it in your Addins folder, or another trusted location, and unblock the file, if necessary.

You can follow the steps on the Install and Use Excel Add-ins page.

When your activating the add-in in Excel, Look for the Add-in named Personal Filter Functions.

Get the Filter Add-in

To get AlexJ’s free Excel Filter add-in, go to the Filter Right-Click Macros page on my Contextures site.

You can see all the code there to, and details on how the Right-Click Filter add-in works.

Another Way to Customize Right-Click Menus

If you want to make lots of changes to the right-click menus in Excel, take a look at Doug Glancy’s free add-in, MenuRighter.

I wrote about the MenuRighter add-in a few years ago, here on the Contextures blog. This short video shows you how the MenuRighter works.

In the video, I make a couple of simple changes to a right-click menu. You’ll also see how to go back to the default right-click menu, if you change your mind.
